Macao Science Center Will Launch Its “Science Reading Month” in April The Science Fiction Literary Lecture – “Joyfully Reading the Beauty of Science Fiction” Is Now Open Online
In alignment with the “National Reading Campaign Week” initiated by the State Council this year and the “World Book Day” designated by UNESCO, the Macao Science Center will hold various events in April themed “Science Reading Month”. These activities will encompass science fiction literature lectures, the Coffee Festival reading zone, online reading sections, and astronomy science popularization seminars, in order to ignite public interest in reading and cultivate a culture that values science through literature.
China just implemented the “regulation to promote public reading” in February, designating the fourth week of April each year as “National Reading Campaign Week”. To this end, the Macao Science Center and the China Writers Association will once again join hands to host the Science Fiction Literary Lecture – “Joyfully Reading the Beauty of Science Fiction”, aiming to foster the cultivation of innovative talents through literature. Over the past three years, award-winning young science fiction authors including Cheng Jingbo, Tianrui Shuofu, Feijia, Yuantong and Li Yiqian were invited to Macao for exchanges, garnering enthusiastic responses from local youth.
This year’s event will be held at 4:30 pm on April 22 at the Ho Yin Hall of the Kao Yip Middle School, with the theme of “Dancing with Science Fiction: How Do We Write in the AI Era?”. Two young science fiction authors from the Chinese mainland, Liang Ling and Luo Xia, will visit Macao to discuss with young people the transformation and challenges of science fiction writing amid the rise of AI. The event will be streamed online, and the public is welcome to watch the live stream of the event through the China Writers website, the Macao Science Center’s Facebook page, or the Center’s YouTube channel.
The Macao Science Center, in conjunction with the Macau Youth Development Service Centre, will hold the “Macao Coffee Festival” at the Heart-shaped Tree Square of Macao Science Center from April 18 to June 1. The Festival brings together many local coffee and roasting brands, offering hand-drip coffee experiences, musical performances, workshops, and cultural and creative products for sale. In response to the “Science Reading Month,” a reading zone will be set up on site, allowing the public to enjoy the pleasure of reading in a comfortable outdoor space. The Center will also launch an online section called “Fun with Popular Science” on its social media platforms, introducing selected popular science books every week.
The astronomy education series “Starry Night” will hold two full-dome lectures in April: a lecture on “Cosmic String Theory” on April 12 at 5 PM, by Mr. Yue Wai Chun, head of the Hong Kong Astronomical Society’s occultation section; and a lecture on “The Past, Present and Future of the Universe” on April 26 at 5 PM, by Mr. Lei Si Heng, President of the Macao Astronomical Society. Those interested can get free tickets at the Center’s ticket office on the day of the event.
Macao Science Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday, and is closed on Thursdays and Lunar New Year’s Eve. For more details on upcoming events and programs, please visit the Center’s website (www.msc.org.mo) or follow its official social media channels for the latest updates.
