    To implement the Macao SAR Government’s policy on general education in artificial intelligence (AI) for the whole of society and to promote the establishment of a science popularization education system in AI, the Macao Science Center successfully held the “AI Grand Lecture” today (9 July) during the opening ceremony of the “Journey in the Cloud with Tongyi – Inter-school Generative AI Competition by Alibaba Cloud”. As a key component of the “General AI Education Action for All Society”, the event continued the interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approach of the first AI Grand Lecture. Experts from Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone business of Alibaba Group, were invited to share insights on development trends in AI technology, innovative applications in areas such as smart cultural tourism and environmental monitoring, and their professional career journeys. The event attracted participation from over 130 teachers and students, industry representatives, and members of the public.

    Dr. Sio Hon Pan, Curator of the Macao Science Center, stated in his opening speech that artificial intelligence is reshaping the global landscape at an unprecedented pace, and generative AI has become a core engine of innovation. He expressed hope that through this competition, students could explore the boundaries of AI in the cloud while developing a strong sense of humanity and using technology to respond to global challenges. In line with the integrated development strategy of “Education, Technology, and Talent”, the Macao Science Center launched the “General AI Education Action for All Society” in June, aiming to build an online and offline, multi-level, lifelong AI learning system for different groups from three dimensions: AI knowledge and recognition, AI logic and tool utilization, and applying AI to solve real-world problems. The Center hopes to join hands with Alibaba Cloud to build a higher-dimensional AI learning platform, enabling young people to master AI technology through professional mentorship, real-case analysis, and practical competitions, and to embrace the infinite possibilities of the AI era.

    The event featured Professor Che Pin Cheuk, JP, Senior Consultant for North Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia Region at Alibaba Cloud, as the keynote speaker. Titled “Empowering Macao’s Future with AI”, his talk explored in depth the exponential growth of AI capabilities and the frontiers of technology development. He focused on fields such as smart cultural tourism and environmental monitoring, illustrating how AI drives local innovation in Macao. Professor Che noted that AI is transforming into a core for task resolution, advancing societal progress through applications such as document processing and facial recognition. Hardware costs are decreasing due to Moore’s Law, while software capabilities increase by 30% every six months. In human-machine collaboration, he emphasized the importance of information interconnectivity, natural language interaction, and optimizing instruction precision. Looking ahead, he predicted an era of intelligent agents, where traditional websites and apps will be replaced by a networked ecosystem. He encouraged youth to seize development opportunities using the Tongyi platform.

    Following that, Ms. Ip Man Lam, Senior Business Development Manager (Retail and Group) at Alibaba Cloud, shared her career journey in a talk titled “The Journey of an Alibaba Employee from Macao to Hong Kong”, highlighting the power of AI collaboration. Drawing from her personal experiences, she illustrated the core value of AI tools in cross-regional collaboration and complex problem-solving. She encouraged Macao students to fully utilize the Tongyi technological ecosystem, combine it with local needs, unleash their creativity, and explore unique career pathways.

    Guests attending the event included:Ms. Mok Ian Ian, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited; Ms. Lei Im Kei, Acting Head of the Student Department of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Father David Chow, President of the Catholic Schools Association of Macao; Mr. Cheang Kit Chio, President of the Board of Directors of the Macao Chinese Educators’ Association;
