Launch of AI General Education for the Whole Society Marks a New Chapter in Science and Technology Education through Synergy with Community Organizations
Artificial Intelligence (AI), as an emerging domain of human development, is not only reshaping modes of production and daily life but also profoundly transforming knowledge creation and dissemination. To implement the Macao SAR Government’s policy on AI general education for the whole society and actively build a popular science education system for AI in Macao, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) and the Macao Science Center, in collaboration with major local community organizations, jointly launched the “AI General Education Initiative for the Whole Society.” This marks a solid step towards enhancing public literacy in science and technology and opens a new chapter in Macao’s science and technology education.
The launch ceremony of the “AI General Education Initiative for the Whole Society” was held this morning (23 June) at the Convention Center of the Macao Science Center, officiated by Mr. Wong Ka Kei, Acting Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Ms. Mok Ian Ian, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited; Ms. Ho Sut Heng, President of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions; Ms. Lau Kam Ling, President of the Women’s General Association of Macau; Mr. Li Zi Song, President of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Macau Cultural Associations; Ms. Lam Man Chi, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau; and Mr. Sio Hon Pan, Curator of the Macao Science Center.
In his speech, Mr. Wong Ka Kei stated that the SAR Government is firmly committed to implementing the national strategy of reinvigorating the country through science and education, strengthening the country through talents, and promoting innovation-driven development. Following the integrated development principle of “education, science and technology, and talent,” efforts are being made to promote AI education across all academic levels and in the broader community. Currently, several higher education institutions in Macao have introduced AI-related disciplines and degree programs, with relevant content incorporated into other disciplines. AI education has been integrated into primary and secondary school curricula, with updates to the IT curriculum guidelines, a mid-term evaluation of the non-tertiary education development plan, financial support for schools to enhance their facilities, the establishment of AI classrooms, and the launch of a “Smart Teaching” platform, expected to cover all secondary schools by the 2026/2027 academic year. The Bureau will also work with community organizations and the Science Center to promote AI-related science education at the community level through both online and offline initiatives, tailored curricula for various needs, and the delivery of education resources to communities.
Ms. Mok Ian Ian stated that the Macao Science Center will launch a three-tier “age-friendly” curriculum, offering AI literacy and safety education for seniors, practical AI applications for general residents, and workplace competency enhancement for working professionals. The Center will collaborate with technology enterprises to update its curriculum and train instructors, deepen cooperation with community organizations to accurately address local needs, and bring AI equipment and teaching resources to elderly housing, day care centers, and community facilities, thereby ensuring equal access to learning. In addition, the Center will regularly host the “AI Forum,” inviting experts to share the latest trends, technologies, and applications in AI, fulfilling the vision of “leaving no one behind in the AI era.”
Following the launch ceremony, Mr. Sio Hon Pan, Curator of the Macao Science Center, delivered the first “AI Forum” keynote speech titled Understanding the Worldview of AI. The speech demystified AI technologies and their applications in a clear and engaging manner, explored irreplaceable human values in the age of AI, ethical boundaries of human-machine collaboration, and future development prospects. It also included live demonstrations of AI creativity such as real-time content generation and interactive game examples. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the talk illustrated how AI is reshaping social cognition, industrial models, and human thinking, prompting rational reflection on the double-edged nature of technological change. The event drew nearly 300 participants.
Since June, the Macao Science Center has organized various AI science education activities, including an AI application course for teachers and the public scheduled for late June. Between July and August, the Center will host over 30 AI education events, including “Science Exploration Park” and the “AI-STEM Summer Camp.” Registration is now open via the “One Account” app. For more details, please visit the official website (www.msc.org.mo) or follow the Center’s social media platforms.
