2025 FIRST® LEGO® League Asia Open Debuts in Macao 400 Teams from 21 Countries and Regions Worldwide Explore New Frontiers in Deep-Sea Technology

Guided by LEGO® Education, co-organised by the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Greater China Organising Committee and Macao Science Center, with the collaboration of Sands China Ltd., World Class Tests (WCT), and the Tao Xingzhi Education Foundation, and supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, the Macao Chinese Educators Association, and the Catholic Schools Association of Macao, the 2025 FLL Asia Open opened on 8 August at Hall A of The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Expo. The three-day competition brings together 400 teams and nearly 3,000 young participants from 21 countries and regions worldwide to compete and propose innovative solutions for environmental protection and marine resource conservation.

Themed “SUBMERGED”, this year’s competition focuses on deep-sea environmental protection and underwater technology challenges. Participating teams design and programme robots and develop innovative problem-solving solutions to explore and protect deep-sea resources. Ms. Mok Ian Ian, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited, said that as a National Science Popularization Education Base, Macao Science Center has been committed for years to promoting science popularization education for young people, creating platforms for students to showcase their talents, and actively organising various science and technology innovation competitions. This aligns with LEGO® Education’s philosophy of inspiring and nurturing future builders through playful learning. Following the first FLL China Open held in Macao in 2023, Macao Science Center once again joins hands with LEGO® Education as the sole authorised organiser of the FLL Asia Open, marking international recognition of Macao’s long-standing promotion of STEAM education and building a platform for Macao students to engage with top talents from around the globe. This fully embodies the core spirit of FLL by transforming the “competition arena” into a “co-creation arena”, with the hope that participants will unleash boundless imagination and creativity to present innovative outcomes that integrate art with STEM elements.

Mr. Wong Ka Kei, Acting Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, in his speech welcomed all participants to take the opportunity to visit Macao’s hotels, attractions, and cultural heritage sites, to experience the city’s unique tourism resources and rich cultural heritage. He noted that the Bureau has been dedicated to promoting science and technology education in Macao, continuously advancing school development through the Education Development Fund and reforms in science and technology curricula. Macao students have achieved remarkable results in various science and technology competitions in recent years. He looked forward to further strengthening exchanges and cooperation among young people from different places and called on all sectors to pay attention to global development, technological progress, and marine environmental protection issues, contributing to sustainable development.

Representing Ms. Camilla Bottke, Global Head of Competitions and Events of LEGO® Education, Mr. Troles Dyhrman, Director of International Partner Relations of LEGO® Education, acknowledged the value of the competition in cultivating young people’s innovative and practical abilities, and expressed the hope that they will continue to progress together on the path of technological innovation. At the opening ceremony, Macao Science Center presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr. Wilfred Wong Ying Wai, Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd., in recognition of the company’s contribution to the preparation and venue support of the event.
