Macao Science Center Was Awarded the Green and Low-carbon Science Education Base for the Second Consecutive Year Collaborating with Local Integrated Resorts and Technology Companies to Promote Green Science Education
After receiving the Green and Low-carbon Science Education Base plaque from the Chinese Society for Urban Studies in 2024, Macao Science Center has successfully maintained this honor this year and has additionally become a group member of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies. In collaboration with local integrated tourism and leisure enterprises as well as environmental technology companies, the Center set up a booth to offer workshops for the first time at the 2026 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (MIECF). This initiative aimed to exhibit tangible outcomes of green and low-carbon science education to the public.
The awarding ceremony for the Green and Low-carbon Science Education Base was held today (27th) at the 2026 MIECF. In the presence of honorable guests including Ms. Elaine Wong, Acting President of Board of Directors of Macao Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), and Ms. Chan Mei Pou, Director of the Department of Environmental Planning and Assessment of the Environmental Protection Bureau, Mr. Albert Chuck, President of the China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association, awarded the Center with a plaque certified by the Chinese Society for Urban Studies. This second consecutive award as a Green and Low-carbon Science Education Base underscores the Center’s ongoing recognition for its efforts in green and low-carbon science education. Subsequently, Mr. Lei Ka Hang, Director General of the China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association, awarded the Center with a plaque acknowledging its status as a group member of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies. Both honors were accepted by Dr. Mok Ian Ian, President of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center.
In July 2024, Macao Science Center signed a three-year collaboration agreement with MGM on the “Sustainable Innovation and Green Skills Education Program”. With the support of MGM, Macao Science Center established an exhibition booth (G55) at MIECF for the first time this year. Teaming up with local environmental technology company Chazence, waste straw and recycled tea residue were transformed into renewable materials used for the booth base and main structure, significantly decreasing the carbon footprint during the booth construction. After this exhibition, all building materials will be transported back to the Center for future use, embodying a “zero-waste exhibition” philosophy. The booth, designed by the Center, clinched the third place in the Environmental Protection Booth Award at the MIECF for its environmentally friendly design concept.
At the Center’s booth during the exhibition, four interactive games are available: “Carbon Neutrality Challenge”, “Green Campus Environmental Cards,” “Global Village,” and “Trash is Fun”. Simultaneously, award-winning entries from the “Green and Low-Carbon National Youth Public Welfare Science Popularization Competition” are also on display. On-site, several sessions of “Tea Dregs Recycling Workshops” are conducted, wherein experts guide participants in crafting aroma diffuser ornaments utilizing recycled tea dregs.
In addition, a collaboration agreement was signed between the Center and Sands China at MIECF yesterday (26th) by Dr. Sio Hon Pan, the Curator of Macao Science Center, and Mr. Charlie Cai, vice president of procurement and sustainability for Sands China. The two entities will collaboratively host the “2026 Macao Biodiversity Data Science Challenge” aimed at primary and secondary school students, and assist Macao residents in participating in the “2026 City Nature Challenge” to contribute data to Macao and global biodiversity databases. At the same time, the two entities will conduct eco-guided tours and special lectures for Sands China employees and the public to advocate environmental protection concepts within the community.
In the future, the Center will further enhance its partnerships with the tourism and technology sectors, actively constructing a diverse and integrated science education ecosystem that integrates venues, businesses, and the community. This initiative will offer businesses a platform to fulfill their social responsibilities through engaging in local science education. At the same time, innovative resources will be introduced to the Center to create educational programs that meet social needs while being both meaningful and enjoyable.
