Macao Science Center Launches a Series of Spectacular Events in December to Celebrate Its 15th Anniversary
Macao Science Center will organize a series of events in December to share the joy of its 15th anniversary with the public. The activities include the The Shaw Prize 2024 Exhibition, the new planetarium show Building a Dream Palace, the astronomy education series Illuminating the Stars, and the science flash mob theater. On December 19 (the center’s anniversary) and December 20 (the anniversary of the Macao SAR), the Exhibition Center will be open to the public free of charge, as usual. The first 30 spectators for each planetarium show who present their Macao Resident Identity Card will also be granted free entry. From December 20 to January 2 of the following year, additional show sessions will be scheduled to celebrate Christmas and New Year with Macao residents and visitors.
The planetarium lobby is currently hosting the The Shaw Prize 2024 Exhibition, showcasing this year’s winners in the fields of Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences, along with their outstanding research achievements. The new planetarium show Building a Dream Palace will premiere on December 19, highlighting the development, achievements, and future prospects of China’s space technology, as well as the vibrant lives of astronauts aboard space stations.
On December 7 at 5:00 p.m., the planetarium will host the event Illuminating the Stars: Starry Night Concert. Lee Chi Fai, President of the Macao Astronomical Society, will lead the band Emotional Music Together in an immersive audiovisual performance under the dome of the starry sky. On December 8 at 5:00 p.m., Dr. “EN Jun” from the renowned astronomy popularization team EasyNight will present the planetarium lecture Illuminating the Stars: Wukong’s Search for Dark Matter, sharing the story of the Dark Matter Particle Explorer “Wukong” with the audience. On December 21 at 8:00 p.m., the center will hold the event Illuminating the Stars: Stargazing Night at Hac Sa Long Chao Kok. Dr. Ng Kin Weng, President of the Macao Astronomy Photography Association, will guide participants in observing the winter night sky with the naked eye and explaining scientific knowledge about classic winter constellations in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Science Flash Mob - Meet Astronomers at MSC will take place in the Macao Science Center lobby at 3:00 p.m. on December 22 and at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on December 23 and 24. Performers will portray Johann Schreck, an astronomer from the late Ming Dynasty, sharing fascinating stories of astronomy from over 400 years ago. Visitors will also have the opportunity to try telescopes and experience the joy of observing celestial phenomena.
The special Christmas session 2024 STEAM x Picture Books x Storytelling will be held from December 22 to 24 at 2:00 p.m. in Exhibition Gallery 5, using science-themed picture books and fun experiments to introduce children to scientific concepts such as changes in light and shadow and magnetism. The Mystery of Optical Fiber Bending parent-child workshops will take place at 3:00 p.m. on December 24 and 25 in the FabLab, where science educators will guide children in fun experiments to explore the fascinating world of fiber optics. Every Saturday in December from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the center will hold multiple Code the Future Workshops in the Science Picture Book Library, allowing parents and children to experience various educational programming tools and virtual-interactive games. From December 23 to 31, the MSC official WeChat account will host an online prize-winning game, encouraging public participation to win attractive prizes.
The SciResonance Campus Music Show will be held at 5:00 p.m. on December 1 and 8 at the Heart-shaped Tree Square. Students from Chan Sui Ki Perpetual Help College and Pui Ching Middle School will perform enchanting music pieces to provide visitors with a relaxing weekend afternoon.
