The China Three-Star Green Building Certification Award Ceremony and the launch of 100 Questions on Green and Low-Carbon Cities in Macao were held this morning (26th) in the Planetarium Lobby of the Macao Science Center. Witnessed by the Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, the President of the General Meeting of Shareholders of the Macao Science Center Company Limited, Mr. Kong Chi-ming, and the President of the Supervisory Board, Mr. Kuan Ho-wing, Mr. Wang Youwei, Director of the Professional Committee on Green Buildings and Energy Conservation of the China Society for Urban Studies, and Mr. Cheok Chong-yin, President of the China Green Building and Energy Conservation (Macao) Association, presented the China Three-Star Green Building Certification plaque and certificate to the Macao Science Center. The awards were received on behalf of the Center by Ms. Mok Ian Ian, Chairperson of the Board of Directors, and Mr. Sio Hon Pan, a Board member and Executive Committee member of Macao Science Center Limited and Curator of Macao Science Center. This milestone marks the alignment of the operation of Macao’s public facilities with national green building standards.

The Macao Science Center, designed by internationally renowned Chinese-American architect Mr. I.M. Pei, adopts geometric forms as the core design concept and extensively uses materials such as steel, aluminum, and glass, achieving energy efficiency through natural lighting. After being awarded the China Three-Star Green Building Design Label in 2016, the Center has continuously enhanced its operation management and environmental quality, improving energy and water efficiency through measures such as implementing automated management and monitoring systems, upgrading air-conditioning units, replacing lighting with LED energy-saving fixtures, laying permeable bricks on outdoor surfaces, and installing a rainwater collection system for landscape irrigation. During this process, the Center was required to regularly submit energy monitoring data and operational reports to the Green Building Review Expert Committee. After stringent assessment confirming all indicators had consistently met the standards, the Center achieved a comprehensive green upgrade from design to operation. It is now the first government public building complex in Macao to obtain both the Three-Star Design and Operation Labels. In 2024, the Center was also designated as a “Green and Low-Carbon” Science Education Base by the China Society for Urban Studies.

In his speech, Mr. Wang Youwei, Director of the Professional Committee on Green Buildings and Energy Conservation of the China Society for Urban Studies, stated that the nation attaches great importance to green and low-carbon development and a comprehensive green transition. The green and low-carbon science education activities held in Macao earlier this year were remarkably successful and widely acclaimed, showcasing Macao’s potential in promoting green education. He expressed hope that similar events can be held annually to encourage young people to embrace green and low-carbon concepts and adopt green lifestyles.

In his speech, Mr. Sio Hon Pan, a Board member and Executive Committee member of Macao Science Center Limited and Curator of Macao Science Center, expressed his gratitude to the expert team for their guidance and support, as well as to the staff members of the Macao Science Center for their dedication. He noted that the Macao Science Center's attainment of the China Three-Star Green Building Certification signifies recognition in terms of energy conservation, environmental protection and healthy building standards. It also serves as a significant driving force for the architectural development within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He expressed the hope that more building projects would join the ranks of green buildings in the future, thereby creating a more liveable and low-carbon environment for residents. Furthermore, he revealed plans to collaborate with scientific research institutions to develop data platforms, as well as product demonstration and testing platforms for technology enterprises, leveraging the Science Center’s architecture and performance indicators to assist in showcasing innovative products.

To promote the core concepts and key technologies of green and low-carbon urban development among children and youth, the event also included the launch of the publication 100 Questions on Green and Low-Carbon Cities. Authored by leading national experts and published by China Architecture & Building Press, the book presents practical information in a Q&A format, comprehensively introducing key national strategies such as the “dual carbon” goals, green buildings, efficient use of energy and water resources, and low-carbon lifestyles. Prior to the launch, Mr. Liu Jing, Deputy Chief Editor of the book and Technical Director of Beijing Urban Construction Design & Development Group, presented an overview of its contents to the guests. The Macao Science Center plans to gradually distribute the book free of charge to all primary and secondary schools across Macao, with the aim of enhancing the public's scientific literacy. The book is also available for public reading at the Center’s Popular Science Picture Book Pavilion and the Sustainable Development Gallery (Gallery 11).

The Macao Science Center has already obtained ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certification and a Carbon Audit Certificate. With continued support from the Macao SAR Government and the Education and Youth Development Bureau, the Center will continue to leverage its unique strengths as a green and low-carbon science education base and a holder of the China Three-Star Green Building Label. It is committed to promoting the concept of green and low-carbon living to the public, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of society.

Other guests attending the event included: Mr. Wu Shi-yao, Head of the Environmental Planning Department of the Environmental Protection Bureau; Mr. Lee Kin-hang, Senior Vice President for Human Resources and Sustainability of MGM; Mr. Wong Chung-yuen, Vice President of the Architects Association of Macau; members of the Board of Directors and the Advisory Committee of the Macao Science Center Company Limited; and members of the China Green Building and Energy Conservation (Macao) Association.
