Special Exhibition “Polar Research and Sustainable Development” Opens at Macao Science Center Today Displays China's Polar Scientific Research Achievements and Innovative Technologies

To celebrate that China's fourth generation polar research vessel, “Xuelong 2”, the first that was domestically built with independent intellectual rights, has successfully established the fifth Antarctic research station of China, “Qinling Station”, the Special Exhibition “Polar Research and Sustainable Development”, jointly organized by Macao Science Center, Green Environment Protection Association of Macau, Green Future Foundation Association as well as Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong and funded by MGM, is held in the atrium of the Exhibition Center of Macao Science Center as from today (October 18) to December 1.

Polar regions boast not only abundant fresh water resources but large amounts of minerals and fossil energy. They are important for maintaining the biodiversity. The climate and ecological changes in polar regions have profound impacts on global climate, marine ecological balance, distant-water fisheries and carbon sinks, and as a result, they also play a vital role in international transportation and strategy. Polar scientific research helps scientists understand the causes and effects of climate changes, providing key bases for the prediction on future climatic change trend.

In the congratulatory letter on the operation of Qinling Station in Antarctica, Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out: With the 40th anniversary of China's polar expedition coming this year, China's polar cause has gotten off the ground and grown rapidly. The fruitful results are owed to the struggles, persistence, commitment, carefulness and diligence of generations of polar workers. “Xuelong 2” model and rare biological specimens such as Antarctic lichen, Antarctic krill and penguin skeletons will be presented in the Special Exhibition “Polar Research and Sustainable Development”. The exhibition will introduce the scientific research and exploration process in polar regions, and display China's scientific research achievements and multiple key innovative technologies. That is how to raise the public awareness of polar research and exploration, as well as marine and polar security, encourage the public to pay attention to global climate changes, maintain the biodiversity and support the sustainable development in polar regions.

This afternoon, Macao Science Center stages the opening ceremony for Special Exhibition “Polar Research and Sustainable Development”. Officiating guests include: Ho Kin-chung, the founder of Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong; Lei Kin Hang, Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Sustainability of MGM; Cheong Hung Fat, Deputy Curator of Macao Science Center; Lon Weng San, President of Green Environment Protection Association of Macau; William Ko Chan-gock, Voluntary Chief Executive of Green Future Foundation Association; David Hui, Chief Executive of Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong and Counselor of Green Future Foundation Association.

Dr. Ho Kin-chung said in his speech: With continuous efforts and innovation, China’s polar scientific research has entered a new stage from a difficult start. We expect that the exhibition will provide the public with an in-depth understanding of the features in environment, ecology, geography and oceanography in polar regions. Also, it is a sharing of the researchers' experience and achievements of many years, enthusing the young more on scientific research and environmental protection and enhancing the awareness of people from all walks of life, and carrying forward the spirit of learning, protecting and utilizing the polar regions.

During the exhibition, the Planetarium will launch a brand new UHD dome show Arctic: Our Frozen Planet. Created by the team behind Oceans: Blue Planet, Arctic: Our Frozen Planet tells that Arctic flora and fauna are facing unprecedented threats when the natural ecological environment of the Arctic is undergoing drastic changes due to global warming. The audience will follow the camera crew to the Arctic, embarking on an epic adventure. The show features Cantonese, Mandarin and English narration, suitable for all ages.

Macao Science Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Sunday regardless of public holidays, and is closed on Thursdays and Lunar New Year’s Eve. Please check the latest announcements on MSC’s official website (www.msc.org.mo) and social media accounts for more event information and news.
