Organized by the Macao Science Center and Sands China, the explanatory session for the "2025 Macao Biodiversity Data Science Challenge" was successfully held yesterday (24th) at the Macao Science Center, introducing details of the competition. Registrations are now open, and local students and residents are welcome to participate.

Guests attending the explanatory session included: Mr. Oscar LEONG Si Chong, Director of Education and Exhibits Department of the Macao Science Center; Ms. ZHAO Jie, Deputy Director of Sustainability Department of Sands China Ltd.; and Dr. LEONG Chi Man, a Macao biologist.

The “2025 Macao Biodiversity Data Science Challenge” aims to cultivate local students' and the public's interest in biodiversity, enhance scientific literacy and environmental awareness. Through this event, the organizers hope to encourage public awareness of the biodiversity around us, understanding the importance of environmental protection, and contributing to biodiversity data collection both locally and globally through participants' observations and data analysis.

This competition consists of two main categories: the Individual Challenge and the Team Challenge, which will be held simultaneously with the global "City Nature Challenge". Participants are required to observe and document local wildlife species, upload species data and photos to the biodiversity database via the iNaturalist application, conduct data analysis, and propose innovative ecological conservation strategies.

The registration period for the “Individual Challenge” is from today until March 30; while the registration for the “Team Challenge” runs from today until April 30. Macao Science Center will provide free training courses and online teaching resources to assist participants in acquiring biodiversity survey techniques. Additionally, Sands China will provide transportation services for student participants of the “Individual Challenge” from April 25 to April 28 to facilitate their exploration of the natural environment.
