UNESCO has designated April 23 as “World Book Day” each year. In celebration, Macao Science Center will host a series of events throughout April under the theme of “Popular Science Reading Month”. Among them, the sci-fi literature lecture “Exploring the Beauty of Science Fiction”, jointly organised for the third consecutive year with the China Writers Association, will once again be held on World Book Day as scheduled. In line with the science reading theme, the Center will launch a limited-time 20% discount promotion on the New Knowledge in Science and Technology Series, available for purchase at the Gift Shop in the main lobby from April 18 to 27. In addition, the Center will host the expert lecture “Innovation and Inclusion: The Journey of Women in Engineering” and present three astronomy-themed science activities under the “Starry Night” series.

Science fiction literature combines scientific elements with humanistic reflections, posing questions about the future while contemplating the present. Amidst the rapid advancement of science and technology and the profound transformation of global dynamics, sci-fi literature offers a unique perspective that inspires imagination of boundless possibilities. The sci-fi literature lecture “Exploring the Beauty of Science Fiction”, co-organised by Macao Science Center and the China Writers Association and supported by the City University of Macau, will take place at 3:00 p.m. on April 23 at the Cultural Centre Theatre of the City University of Macau. Themed “How Far Is the Future”, the event will feature two award-winning young sci-fi writers from the Mainland, Li Yiqian and Ningmeng Yuyan, who will be invited to Macao to share their creative journeys and insights into the future. Registration for the event opens on April 1 via the Macao One Account application.

On the afternoon of April 1, Macao Science Center and Macao University of Science and Technology will jointly host an expert lecture at the Center’s Conference Hall, featuring Professor Qiao Sun, an engineering scholar from Canada. Entitled “Innovation and Inclusion: The Journey of Women in Engineering”, the lecture will explore gender equality in the field of engineering as well as the contributions and challenges faced by women in scientific and technological innovation. Online registration is now open via the following link: https://forms.gle/Tkt1bkHHLATqVB4u7.

Moreover, the Center will also present three events under the “Starry Night” astronomy science series. On April 12 at 5:00 p.m., the full-dome lecture “Dark Matter and Dark Energy” will be delivered by Mr. Lee Sze Hing, President of the Macao Astronomical Society. On April 19 at 5:00 p.m., internationally renowned astrophotographer Mr. Dai Jianfeng will present “Wonders of the Sky: Chasing Stars at the Edge of the World”, sharing his experiences photographing the night sky around the globe. On April 26 at 8:00 p.m., the Center will host “Astronomy by the Seawall: Pop-up Stargazing Night”, where telescopes will be set up along the seawall outside the Center for the public to observe spring constellations. No registration is required for these events, and tickets can be collected for free at the ticketing counter on the day of the activity.

The ongoing exhibition “Shining China: Science and Innovation for the Future” will conclude on April 6. The public is encouraged to seize the final opportunity to visit and learn about the nation’s major scientific and technological achievements and the spirit of its scientists. On the same morning at 11:00 a.m., a parent-child workshop titled “Oil Hunting in Rocks” will be held at the Digital Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab), with registration now open via the Macao One Account. Meanwhile, the exhibition “Adventures in Hengqin: A Symphony of Nature and the Future – The Marvelous World of Life and Carbon” is ongoing at the Exhibition Centre Atrium, showcasing Hengqin’s natural ecology and conservation efforts.
