To celebrate International Women's Day, the Macao Science Center and The Fu Lun Youth Association of Macau recently co-organized a science popularization activity titled “Women's Power in Science and Technology – Promoting the Spirit of Science”, which attracted nearly 40 members of the association and their children. Through guided exhibition tours, light and shadow performances, and parent-child workshops, participants were introduced to the remarkable contributions of scientific and technological professionals over the 75 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, promoting the spirit of scientists.

Ms. Cheong Siu In, Head of the Public Relations Department of the Macao Science Center, and Mr. Fong Seong Ian, Head of the Promotion and Marketing Department of the Macao Science Center, warmly welcomed the delegation from The Fu Lun Youth Association of Macau and remarked that the Center has always valued exchanges and cooperation with local women’s organizations. Seizing the opportunity of this year’s International Women’s Day, the Center once again co-organized a parent-child science popularization activity with the association, hoping to enhance the scientific literacy of young women, encourage women to learn scientific applications or engage in technological innovation, contribute to nurturing a new generation of innovation and technology talents in Macao, and inject new impetus into the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The first stop of the activity was a visit to the thematic exhibition “Shining China: Innovation and the Future of Science”. Through interactive exhibits, real objects, and explanatory texts and images, participants learned about the research and development process of the “Two Bombs, One Satellite” project, key technological breakthroughs and achievements in oil exploration, as well as the inspiring stories of leading figures in science and technology. They explored the collective wisdom and resilient spirit behind the building of a strong technological nation.

Afterwards, the members of The Fu Lun Youth Association of Macau watched the original light and shadow performance “Heart of Heaven and Earth – Stories of Chinese Scientists”, which vividly portrayed the lives and achievements of Qian Xuesen, known as the “Father of China’s Aerospace”; Li Siguang, the “Founder of Geomechanics in China”; and Xie Xide, the “Mother of China’s Semiconductors”, as well as their outstanding contributions to the nation's scientific and technological progress. The event also featured a parent-child workshop, where members of The Fu Lun Youth Association of Macau and their children, under the guidance of science popularization instructors, used simple materials to create small air cannons, learning knowledge related to aerodynamics and developing hands-on practical skills as well as teamwork and communication abilities.

Ms. Ao Ieong Ut Seng, President of The Fu Lun Youth Association of Macau, expressed her gratitude for the support of the Macao Science Center in this activity. She hopes that through the strength of the association, more young women will be encouraged to pay attention to the development of scientific and technological innovation in the nation and Macao, cultivate an interest in science, understand and promote the spirit of scientists, and inspire personal growth and that of the next generation, becoming pioneers, participants, and practitioners in scientific exploration and work that benefits society.

A parent who participated in the activity with her child considered the parent-child workshop an excellent way to introduce science. During the process of making an air cannon together with her child, she learned a lot of popular science knowledge about airflow and pressure and successfully launched the air cannon under the instructor’s guidance. This interactive learning experience, which combines play and education, helps children retain the knowledge they have learned and enhances their interest in science.
