The Macao Science Center Wins the "Best Sci-Fi IP Operation Institution and Organization Award" at the First Macao International Science Fiction Awards
The award ceremony and press conference for the inaugural "Macao International Science Fiction Awards" were recently held at the University of Macau. Sci-fi literature creators and experts from various regions gathered to witness this major event in the world of science fiction. The "Macao International Science Fiction Awards" featured 23 categories, including Best Sci-Fi Novel Award, Best Sci-Fi Novella Award, Best Sci-Fi Short Story Award, Best Sci-Fi Children's Literature Award, Best Sci-Fi Animation Award, and Best New Sci-Fi Writer Award. The Macao Science Center was honored with the "Best Sci-Fi IP Operation Institution and Organization Award" in recognition of its active role in enhancing young students' awareness of science popularization, inspiring their imagination of the future, and igniting their passion for science and technology. The award was accepted on behalf of the Macao Science Center by Professor Tam Kam Weng, a director of Macao Science Center Limited.
The "Macao International Science Fiction Awards" commenced its call for submissions in December 2023, attracting the participation of numerous sci-fi enthusiasts from both China and abroad. The event was jointly organized by the Federação das Associações dos Sectores Culturais de Macau, the Associação dos Autores de Macau, the Associação de Literatura e Arte Críticos de Macau, the Centro de História e Cultura Chinesas da Universidade de Macau, and the Associação de Cultura Tradicional Chinesa Excelente de Macau. It was co-organized by the Faculdade de Ciências Humanas da Universidade de Macau, the China-Asia Economic Development Association, and the Associação de Amizade de Nanjing de Macau. The awards aim to further promote the exchange and development of the science fiction and creative industries, establishing Macao as a hub for an authoritative and professional international sci-fi gala. With its foundation rooted in the unique literary characteristics and strengths of Macao, the Macao International Science Fiction Awards strive to advance Macao as a key center for the sci-fi industry, enhance its influence in the international literary community, and highlight Macao's contributions to the construction of national sci-fi culture in the new era.
The "Macao International Science Fiction Awards" is advised by Wang Meng, former Minister of the Ministry of Culture, and Yang Buting, former Deputy Director of the Film Bureau of the National Radio and Television Administration. The final judging panel includes Wu Yiqin, Vice Chairman of the China Writers Association; Wu Zhiliang, President of the Federação das Associações dos Sectores Culturais de Macau; Liang Hongying, former Editor-in-Chief of Literature and Art and renowned writer; Ding Yaping, Associate Researcher at the China National Academy of Arts; Ge Hongbing, Professor at Shanghai University; Wu Yan, Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology; Lin Tingfeng, former Senior Vice President of China Literature Group; as well as renowned sci-fi writers Wang Jinkang and Han Song.
Guests attending the award ceremony included Cheng Yanxi, representative of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Li Zisong, President of the Federação das Associações dos Sectores Culturais de Macau; Zhang Shimin, representative of the Associação de Cultura Tradicional Chinesa Excelente de Macau; Yang Buting, former Deputy Director of the Film Bureau of the National Radio and Television Administration; renowned writer Wang Jinkang; and renowned writer Wu Yan, among others.
The Macao Science Center, in collaboration with the China Writers Association, jointly organized the "Appreciating the Beauty of Sci-Fi" literary lecture series in 2023 and 2024. Over the two years, the event featured prominent post-80s sci-fi writers Fei Jia and Yuan Tong, as well as Tianrui Shuofu, winner of the Best Sci-Fi Novel Award, and Cheng Jingbo, winner of the Best Sci-Fi Novella Award at the "Macao International Science Fiction Awards."These guest speakers visited Macao to share insights on the history and current state of sci-fi literature development. They engaged with young students and audiences by sharing their creative experiences and offering unique perspectives on the interplay between technological innovation and sci-fi writing.
