Macao Science Center Is Named a Demonstration Base for Application under the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology

Recently, Macao Science Center was named a Demonstration Base for Application under the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Professor Ge Jian, project leader of the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology entitled "Research on the Energy Efficiency and Health Performance Improvement of Building Operations Based on Lifecycle Carbon Emissions Reduction", presented to Macao Science Center in the afternoon today (the 29th) the "Demonstration Base for Application" plaque that incarnates the state's support and recognition of the Center's energy conservation, carbon reduction and environmental science education. Sio Hon Pan, a director and a member of the Executive Committee of Macao Science Center Limited as well as curator of the Center, accepted the plaque on behalf of the Center.

With the strong support of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Macao Science Center is committed to creating green buildings, maximizing energy conservation throughout the lifecycles of buildings, comprehensively promoting high-quality development goals, better integrating into the overall development of the country, and participating in the "Research on the Energy Efficiency and Health Performance Improvement of Building Operations Based on Lifecycle Carbon Emissions Reduction" program under the Project Management Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Center as a Demonstration Base for Application will provide indoor environmental monitoring data as a reference for establishing a basic database of multi-dimensional parameters for the comprehensive performance during the building operations phase.

"Research on the Energy Efficiency and Health Performance Improvement of Building Operations Based on Lifecycle Carbon Emissions Reduction" is an "Inter-governmental Project for International Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation" since the "13th Five-Year Plan" of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Its goal is to build a technical system for the energy efficiency and health performance improvement of building operations throughout the lifecycles so as to help the country achieve the goals of "carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality".

Macao Science Center was awarded the "Three-starred Certificate of Green Building Design Label" by the China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association in 2016, the highest level of green building design certificate in China. In recent years, by organizing science picture book story sharing, the Youth Science Video Contest, MSC-school collaboration and teacher training courses, and launching more than 20 episodes of serial science education films on the themes of "peak carbon emissions" and "carbon neutrality" on YouTube, among many other forms, the Center has enhanced the awareness of the importance of energy conservation, carbon reduction and the "dual carbon" goals amongst the public, especially among primary and secondary school students. In the future, the Center will continue to cooperate with the Macao SAR Government on its environmental protection planning, contribute to the energy conservation, carbon reduction and environmental science education in Macao in accordance with the green building guidelines of the state and Macao, and make good use of its architectural features and advantages in science, technology and innovation to promote the popular science knowledge of green buildings and sustainable development to the public, so as to help the country achieve an early realization of the "dual carbon" goals.

Officiating guests who attended and witnessed the awarding ceremony also included: Mok Ian Ian, president of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited, U Hon Sang, a director and a member of the Executive Committee of Macao Science Center Limited, Cheong Hung Fat, deputy curator of Macao Science Center, Cheong Kim Fong, head of the Facility Management and Sustainable Development Department of Macao Science Center, Wang Youwei, director of the China Green Building Council, Gao Weijun, an academician of the Engineering Academy of Japan, and Chuck Chung Yin, Abert, president of the China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association.
