Macao Science Center celebrates 9th anniversary with wonderful programs

To celebrate the 9th anniversary of the opening of Macao Science Center (MSC) and share joy with the public, we have prepared a string of wonderful exhibitions and programs.

Biomimicry or biomimetics is a cross-disciplinary science. Biomimetics has many applications, in biology, science of materials, engineering, medicine, machinery and agriculture. Inspired by the observation and analysis of the natural environment, the ecology and structure of plants and animals, humans have applied the over 3.8 billion years of wisdom of organisms’ biological evolution and adaptation to the environment to innovative technology or product design to provide solutions for various problems faced by humanity.

This afternoon, took place at MSC the opening ceremony of exhibition “Biomimicry – Inspired by Nature” officiated by VIPs including Mr. Tong Chi Kin, and Mr. Steven Lei, Macao Science Center Vice-Presidents and Ms. Chen Hsuch-Yu, Director-general of the National Taiwan Science Education Center, as well as Mr. Pan Sio, MSC Curator and Mr. Sylvester Cheong, Deputy Curator.

“Biomimicry – Inspired by Nature” will take place from today until March 31, 2019, at MSC's Exhibition Center, Gallery 2. A popular science lecture on the application of biomimetic technology will be held on December 1 and 2, 2018. Besides, will be launched a guided theatre appreciation of "The Animal World of Janine Benyus", introducing visitors to the exhibits in a vivid, interesting, and theatrical way, enabling them to understand how humans learn from nature to solve various problems in life.

From 19 December, the Planetarium will screen a brand-new dome show, Phantom of the Universe, which brings you to an exciting adventure of “dark matter”, from the beginning of the Big Bang to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Through steady observation, a scientist named Fritz Zwicky discovered a dark substance and named it “dark matter”. The show describes another scientist, Vera Rubin, who witnesses the orbiting pattern of celestial bodies in the Andromeda Galaxy and guides audience to the deep underground where there is the world's most sensitive dark matter detector, in a deserted gold mine. Audience will even transcend space and time to arrive at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), experiencing in the LHC how particles accelerate until they magnificently collide in an explosive manner, as well as learning how scientists around the world cooperate to investigate and find out the constituents of dark matter.

The MSC and Macao Digital Photography Association co-organise a photo contest, “Our Science Center” that encourages the public to present, in digital images, the MSC’s beautiful sceneries and scenes of its educational activities, aiming to promote it as a great destination for parent-child educational and leisure activities for both citizens and tourists. Nearly a hundred entries have been received, and the award ceremony will be held at the Lobby Exhibition Gallery at 11 a.m. on 1 December. All are welcome to appreciate the award-winning works that are exhibited at the above gallery from 1 December 2018 to 2 January 2019.

The MSC and the School of Continuing Studies of the Macau University of Science and Technology co-holds the “Cultural and Creative Products of Museums” exhibition at the MSC from 19 November 2018 to 6 January 2019, which displays products from different regions so that we can learn about their cultures and museums’ features.

In addition, the Exhibition Center will offer free admission on 19 and 20 December; and for the Planetarium, the first 30 Macao resident entrants to each dome show will be entitled to free admission. Please visit our website (www.msc.org.mo) or follow our WeChat account for details of the above exhibitions, programmes and activities.
