Press Releases
The 1st Anniversary of the Macao Science Center

To celebrate the 1st Anniversary, Macao Science Center will start screening in December the world premiere of a new 3D Dome Show “Natural Selection 3D” and feature 2 special sessions of 3D Sky Show “From WMAP to the Universe”. To express gratitude to the visitors of the Center, a souvenir will be given for each ticket purchase of MOP15 or above on a first-come-first-served basis while stock lasts from 19 December onward. And in January 2011, the Center will host a series of public talks about the Moon.

The newest 3D Dome Show “Natural Selection 3D” for the Planetarium will be released on 18 December (Saturday). The show lasts for 41 minutes and is available in Cantonese, Putonghua, Portuguese and English. Audience will discover how Charles Darwin, a British biologist in the 19th century, spent a lifelong effort completing his great work of “On the Origins of Species” and find out how his idea became an important biology foundation.

In addition, the Planetarium will feature 2 special 3D Sky Shows “From WMAP to the Universe” in Cantonese on 19 and 22 December (Sunday and Wednesday respectively). The shows introduce how the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), the spacecraft that led to the award of the Shaw Prize on Astronomy this year, helps astronomers understand the geometry, age and the composition of the Universe through its mission to map the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation left from the formation of the Universe in the Big Bang model.

To accommodate for the need of more Planetarium shows during Christmas and the New Year’s Eve holidays, 3 additional Dome Shows and Sky Shows will be added to the weekday schedule starting at 11 a.m. between 20 and 31 December. Please refer to the ticketing information section on the Macao Science Center website www.msc.org.mo for details.

Furthermore, Macao Science Center co-organizes with the Chinese Educators Association of Macao the “Exhibition of Selected Works from the Painting Contest for Macao Students”, displaying 45 first-prize winning paintings involving the Macao Science Center buildings by Secondary, Primary and Kindergarten students. The works will be exhibited from 19 December onward at the Special Exhibition Gallery (Gallery 2) in the Exhibition Center.

To express gratitude to all the support the Center received over the first year of service, from 19 December onward, a souvenir will be given for each ticket purchase of MOP15 or above at the ticketing counter on a first-come-first-served basis while stock lasts.

With the recent success of the Chinese Chang’e 2 lunar exploration probe in launching and collecting data of the Moon, the Center will organize a series of 3 public talks and lunar observation activity in January 2011 on 3 consecutive Friday evenings at 7 p.m., namely, “My Date with the Moon” (14 January), “When will the Moon be Bright? – Fun facts of the Moon in 3D” (21 January) and “Ground Data Processing in China’s Lunar Exploration Programme – Lunar Images and Digital Topographic Charts” (28 January).

By November 2010, the Exhibition Center and the Planetarium have received a total number of 306,679 visitors.
