To encourage public participation in science popularising education activities, and to improve local students’ techniques on robotics development, Macao Science Center and Macau Science and Technology Innovation Education Association (MSTIEA) jointly organised the 2nd Macao Robotic Olympiad at the Convention Center of Macao Science Center yesterday (16 May). About 360 students from 12 schools have formed 248 teams to compete for the 85 prizes in the 31 games.
Guests of honour and awards presenters include Dr. Tong Chi-kin, President of Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund; Mr. Chan Wan-hei, Committee Member of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund; Ms. Pun Leng-kio, Director of the Youth Pavilion on Expositions and Special Arts, DSEJ; Mr. Fan Wai-kei, President of Hong Kong Robotic Olympic Association (HKROA); Mr. Kan Chee-kuong, Member of HKROA,; Mr. Yip Chee-kuen, Chief Curator of Macao Science Center and Mr. Lau Kun-wah, President of MSTIEA.
“Thanks to the invitation from HKROA, we have decided to organise the 2nd Macao Robotic Olympiad which offers a wide variety of contests and is a more popular event of its kind,’’ said Mr. Lau Kun-wah, President of MSTIEA, at the award ceremony. “To help equip the students with the right skills for this event, the MSTIEA has organised a number of workshops that feature the fundamentals of robotics including motor, wiring control and computer programming that allow students of different levels to extend their creativity during the development of their own robots. The Robotic Olympiad focuses on cultivating students’ creativity, participants are not allowed to purchase manufactured robots from the market, all participating robots have to be designed and assembled by the students themselves, it is expected to enhance development in students’ rational thinking, creativity and ability to overcome challenges.”
“There is considerable improvement in the performance of all participating students this year and local students are becoming more skilful in their robot assembly techniques. Better robotic control is observed especially during paired games and football competition. Macao Science Center is planning to develop more demonstrations that better present the recent advancements of robotics in Macao to promote the local development and popularisation of robotics.’’ said Mr. Yip Chee-kuen, Chief Curator of Macao Science Center.
The winning teams of the 2nd Macao Robotic Olympiad may represent Macao SAR in the regional contest of Inter-city Robotics Olympics 2010 in Shanghai, China, to exchange ideas on the design and making of robots with the esteemed teams from Hong Kong, Nanhai, Shanghai, Shenyang, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore later this year.
