Chief Architect of Macao Science Center, Mr. I. M. Pei to Receive
the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture

The Chief Architect of Macao Science Center, Mr. I. M. Pei has been named on 6th October 2009 as the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for his lifelong achievement and the great contribution he has made to modern architecture. The award presentation ceremony will be held in London on 11th February 2010.

The Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of U. K. and is given to a person who has had a significant influence "either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture", which is considered as the "Nobel Prize in Architecture".

Mr. I. M. Pei is one of the most respected masters in modern architecture. His unique style has made great impact on the architectural designs of many buildings worldwide since the 1940s. He is especially strong in utilising materials such as steel, concrete, glass and stone to create his extraordinary architectural masterpieces. His best known buildings include the East Wing of the National Gallery Washington DC, USA; the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Boston, USA; Le Louvre glass pyramid, Paris, France; the Bank of China, Hong Kong; and the renovated Miho Museum in Shiga, Japan. As the construction of Macao Science Center completes by the end of this year, Mr. I. M. Pei will have one more masterpiece added to his portfolio, which is expected to be a key landmark in Macao.

RIBA President, Ruth Reed, who chaired the Honours Committee, compliments Mr. I. M. Pei as "one of the greats of 20th to 21st century architecture. The list of his influences and those he has influenced reads like a roll-call of the Modern Movement. Seldom has such a reward been so overdue or so just."

Mr. I. M. Pei who currently lives in New York, said that it is a great honour to receive the Royal Gold Medal and he is looking forward to attending the award presentation ceremony in February 2010.
