Macao Science Center Showcased Demonstrations at the Museum Fair

To celebrate the “International Museum Day”, the “Museum Fair of Macao, Hong Kong and Guangdong Province 2009” was organised by the museums in Macao and was held at the Plaza of Macao Cultural Center on 3 May. The Macao Science Center participated in the event, presenting interactive science exhibits along with two demonstrations that will be featured in the Center.

Displayed in the Center’s uniquely-shaped booth, the two demonstrations were the “Motion Capture System”, which will be displayed in the Sport Challenge Gallery, and the “Digital Sky 2”, which will be used in the Planetarium live shows. A lot of visitors were attracted around the booth, creating a lively scene.

The “Digital Sky 2” enables audience to navigate through the solar system and thus allowing them to gain a clear understanding of the characteristics of the planets. They may also enjoy a variety of astronomical wonders with the help of the digital media technology that can bring them beyond the Milky Way Galaxy. With this special system, the Center hopes to further promote astronomy to the general public, as well as to support the celebration of the “International Year of Astronomy 2009”, which marks the 400th anniversary of the first utilisation of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilee.

In addition, the Center also displayed a number of interactive exhibits, including “Towers of Brahma”, “Sudoku”, and hand dynamometer. These exhibits serve to demonstrate various scientific principles in a concrete and visual way, so that parents can guide their children to acquire science knowledge through playing.

Along with the fair, the museums in Macao also jointly organised a photography contest themed “Museums and Tourism” with the Macao Digital Photography Association for the “International Museum Day”, in hope of giving tourists and local residents an opportunity to capture the beauty and dynamic aspects of the city while they visit the local museums. Thirteen outstanding entries were selected by the judging panel and were exhibited in the Arts Museum near the venue of the fair. Representatives from different museums enjoyed browsing the winning photographs after the opening ceremony.
